The Japan Manta Project, an affiliate of Manta Trust, founded in 2025 by Rika Ozaki to address the urgent issue of manta ray bycatch. Her mission is to reveal the secrets of these magnificent rays in Japan’s waters through scientific research and community collaboration.
A key milestone was the deployment of GPS tags in the Kerama Islands of Okinawa, marking Japan's first manta tracking. Among those we followed is Maggy (まぎー), a majestic 5.5-meter male giant manta, who carries Japan’s first satellite tag, providing us insight into his behavior and migration patterns.
